Ages 7–9: 2nd & 3rd Grade

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105
Your child is becoming a reader, a thinker, and a doer. They’re asking deeper questions about God, faith, and what’s fair—and they’re ready to begin owning their relationship with Jesus in small but significant ways.
FAITH MILESTONES
  • Family Bible Day (2nd Grade)
Your child will receive a Bible at this event, marking a new chapter in their faith journey. Help them make it their own:
    • Let them highlight verses
    • Create bookmarks or tabs
    • Write their name and baptism date inside
  • Learn how to find Scripture
Teach them how to look up Bible verses using the table of contents and chapter/verse system. Practice together using favorites like:

“Be strong and courageous.” – Joshua 1:9
“The Lord is my shepherd.” – Psalm 23

  • Memorize key verses
Consider one verse per month. Use songs, signs, or games to help it stick.
  • Recognize Law and Gospel
Begin helping them distinguish: “This shows me my sin” and “This shows me my Savior.”
  • Ask and wrestle with faith questions
Encourage their curiosity. It’s okay (and good) if they ask things like:

    “Why do bad things happen?”
“Did Jonah really get swallowed by a fish?”
“How do we know God is real?”

  • Grow in worship engagement
They can now begin following the order of service, singing from the hymnal, and reciting the Lord’s Prayer and Apostles’ Creed with understanding.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES
Children this age are developing sharper logic, empathy, and emotional regulation.
  • Cognitive: Stronger reading comprehension, beginning to reason abstractly, connecting cause and effect
  • Emotional: Growing in empathy, fairness, and resilience
  • Social: Building friendships, understanding group dynamics, needing encouragement in confidence and character
They love structure but also begin to question it—making it a great time to talk about why we believe and how we live it out.
PARENTING ENCOURAGEMENT
Your child is watching and listening—more than ever. They may be “big kids,” but they still need guidance, grace, and Gospel-centered reassurance.
📖 Scripture for parents:

“Fathers [and mothers], do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4

  • Let them see you reading your Bible too. Talk about what you're learning.
  • Model grace in discipline—this is how they learn about forgiveness.
  • Answer their questions honestly. If you don’t know the answer, say, “Let’s look it up together” or “Let’s ask Pastor.”
  • Remind them often: “God loves you. Always. No matter what.”
